Things to do at Vallecito Lake

Just because you're staying with us on the quiet side of the lake doesn't mean it has to be all rest and relaxation!

The great thing about Elk Point Lodge's direct lake access is that there is no need to pay a fee to get out on the water!
We have several watercraft that are complimentary for guest use, including paddle boards, kayaks and a canoe, in addition to some exciting water toy and four-legged hoofed additions coming Summer 2025!

On and Around the Lake

Kayak, canoe, or stand up paddle! Grab one of our water toys and hit the lake. Or head over to the marina for motorized fun! Take a self-driving tour of Vallecito's carvings created in the aftermath of the 2002 Missionary Ridge fire. Catch a bite at one of the restaurants. Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

Take a ride back in time on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad to visit the historic mining towns of the area. Be sure to visit the Durango Railroad Museum while you are there. Make sure to book your tickets in advance! Departing from Durango, only 40 minutes from Vallecito Lake.

Experience the life of an ancient civilization by visiting Mesa Verde National park. The cliff dwellings here were the home of the ancestral Pueblo people nearly 700 years ago. Only 1.5 hours away, Mesa Verde makes for a fantastic day trip from Elk Point Lodge.

Million Dollar Highway

For majestic views from the comfort of your vehicle, take a half or whole day drive up highway 550 to Silverton and Ouray (pronounced YOU-ray). These historic mining towns are alive with western flair, you can even go on mine tours! Silverton is a 1.5 hour drive from our property, Ouray another hour beyond that.

Vallecito lake sits at 7800' elevation.
Even a 1500' change to this height of elevation can cause symptoms, so please be aware of your own limitations.
Altitude sickness can affect anyone regardless of age or physical ability.
